Ingredients in Toothpaste You Want to Make Sure You Have

Ingredients in Toothpaste You Want to Make Sure You HaveWe all use toothpaste twice a day and know how important it is for our teeth. However, do you know exactly what ingredients are used to make your toothpaste?

Read on to learn about some of the most important.

Fluoride

When it comes to your toothpaste, fluoride is the main ingredient that you need to have. Fluoride is essential in the fight against cavities and tooth decay, so much so that most municipalities have added it to their drinking water. It strengthens the enamel, and when your teeth are harder, they will be more resistant to acid-related wear.

When selecting a new tube of toothpaste, review the active ingredients. It should contain sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride, or sodium monofluorophosphate. Most brands contain only about 0.15% fluoride, which is just fine.

Calcium Carbonate

Calcium carbonate is an abrasive, which is important in keeping your teeth clean. It will remove surface stains and plaque from the teeth, and it is especially effective when combined with proper brushing technique. This ingredient can keep your teeth white, and it is also responsible for that squeaky-clean feeling you get after you brush.

Glycerol

To keep your toothpaste moist and prevent drying, you need to have a humectant. Some of the most common are glycerol and sorbitol. This ingredient gives toothpaste its smooth texture and helps it to slide out of the tube easily. Glycerol is safe to consume and is added to many food products that require a smooth texture, including peanut butter and yogurt.

Triclosan

Some toothpastes contain triclosan, which serves as an antifungal and antibacterial agent. Specifically, Colgate Total recently used this ingredient to promote their claim of protecting teeth from plaque for 12 hours.
